Here's an interesting article about a simple storytelling technique: http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20050727/sutherland_01.shtml

It is something to think about when writing long quests and campaigns.

I have partly read this article and I must say it is great. A bit lengthy, but that's not bad. Imo every map maker and dev team member should read that article.

Yes it's quite an interesting article... moreso about the way everybody works together in that industry environment... how the designers, programmers, and writers mesh...

Quote
*First, there's a protagonist, a hero.
*His or her world is thrown out of order by an inciting incident.
*A gap opens up between the hero and an orderly life.
*The hero tries the normal, conservative action to overcome the gap. It fails. The world pushes back too hard.
*The hero then has to take a risk to overcome the obstacles that are pushing back.
*Then there is a reversal. Something new happens, or the hero learns something she didn't know before, and the world is out of whack again. A second gap has opened up.
*The hero has to take a greater risk to overcome the second gap.
*After overcoming the second gap, there is another reversal, opening a third gap.
*The hero has to take the greatest risk of all to overcome this gap and get to that object of desire, which is usually an orderly life.

This is quoted from the article.
I think it's quite good, due to it's simplicity and easily modelling to a lot of things. Are there going to be any quests like this?
I can think of a few...I would love to get a quest, go do it, and its not what it seems, like kil the ant queen then loads of her babies come out and attack you! that would be funny, and awesome.
So in this case, the hero, is yourself.
World thrown out of order: This could be invasion of some dark human like figure guys..who you have to go defeat.
Gap opens to orderly life: Learn the location of the person controlling the bad guys.
Risk:
Has to fight through many of the shadow demons (? heh) to get to the master...(could die)
Gap can't be overcome (yet):
fights, gets a curse placed upon him, has to retreat.
Risk to overcome obstacles:
Takes potion, wears amulet, etc, that will increase power, but may have bad side effects, eg could turn him, gradually, into a shadow demon, but has to take this action to eventually be victorious..
Reverse; something new happens:
He learns the master is someone he knows, but has been taken over by a shadow spirit. The someone he knows is someone in which he has deep admiration and respect, so doesn't want to kill him.
Greater risk has to be taken:
Fight on the shadow plane of existance, which is dangerous, he is unclear territory, unfamiliar and not safe. Fights through and kills the shadow master, that is controlling his friend.
Reversal:
He is now being taken over due to the amulet, gap is:
he can find a special priest who can remove the amulet.
Reversal, final one:
Priest says he can remove, or leave the amulet on if he wishes. Exclaiming that leaving on the amulet would give him great advantages on the battle field, (new dark offensive powerful spell?) but you would become bad (evil aligned) or he can have it removed, and go back and get the reward (but not as good as if he stayed evil), which is a disadvantage, but advantage is that he becomes good (good aligned, which has its own benefits!) Now has to decide morally, which is the best decision.

Thats just my suggestion, but i would love to see this! and have it when u undertake this quest u cant use shout, or see it, well at least when u r in the shadow realm. I would love to see a quest/campaign that is long, and has many twists, and has an outcome that will affect ur char greatly...

Had a quick read at it, I think I'll try to incorporate this story structure into my little map/quest. Well it's quite a big map, but anyway. That was really helpful, thanks for sharing that.
You have read something interesting/funny. It was a good signature. That's all you need to know.

That's somewhat taken from "the Hero Way" from Joseph Campbell. It's an extract of mythic heroes stories and legends...
"...unsmiling, he walked away silently. They watched in silence as walked down the valley, until he vanished among the trees. Hate and respect mingled in the air over the hill. Inside his jester soul, he laughed all the way."
