How would people feel about this? It would only be a small proportion of the damage otherwise done. They could kill themselves this way or not, depending on suggestions.

Probably (I think it is easier to code) we wouldn't care about attack type v resistance (after all the hitter may in fact be immune to his own attack). IOW he will hurt himself (punishment for fumbling).

I said hitter for a reason. Just mobs or players too (and if so just in PvM or PvP too)?

Haha. Hm, but every fumble wouldn't necessarily lead to the person hitting themselves in a real sword fight. Maybe it could be a 1/3 chance?

1/3 for losing hp, 1/2 for it doing what it currently does... maybe 1/6 that it moves you because your weapon is so heavy and you don't want to drop it... Then there's variety.

I think killing yourself is a natural result of hurting yourself, so should definitely be allowed and both mods and players in all circumstances :)

How would it work for mages/priests? They're already at a severe advantage within the game compared to mercs.

Spell fails:

0-Backfire; Damage causing and "negative" status spell targets caster instead of selected target, causing some percentage of damage to caster or the "negative" status.  "Positive" status causing spell remains on target but causes opposite status ie "Improved Strength" status would cause "Reduced Strength" status.

1-Bad aim; Spell's target changes to random target in range.  NPC's, Mobs, PC's can be targeted and can receive the spell's effect, not an opposite effect as for "Backfire".

2-Distracted caster; Increased casting time and/or reduced effectiveness of spell (reduced range, reduced damage, reduced time of status effect, reduced power of status effect).

Nice :) That seems fair - same for MD and Ag to, would hope.

Ah! Hadn't even considered spells. I was just looking through attack.c thinking how best to modify it for SmackVAtts. But yes, we have spell fumble already. IIRC this is just like melee (and missile) fumble in that nothing happens. So it'd make sense to revisit that too, something like Ell suggests.

Similarly MDs can whine can't they? So occasionally they should be able to throw a full tantrum...

HAHAHAHA, i like that, a Horn causing a firestorm around a player.  I think it would be funny if it was like the old position 0 firestorm where it had a nova effect, but goes inward toward the player instead of outward.

This actually sounds like alot of work now, since you would have to have a fumble contingency for each spell...

Yes an exploding horn would be easy as there is just one obvious option for what it does.

For fumbled spells, perhaps do an appropriate magical/elemental/spherical hit on the caster combined with suitable pyrotechnics?

All of this (fumbles so bad they actually hurt) would be very very rare though.

What about prayers? We can currently occasionally fumble the prayer. I can see the Tabernacle getting pissed (SmackVAtt for Godpower, anyone?) when the player says something in a prayer that it doesn't like.

haha, like:

"I pray that thee gets healed!" character gets hit "God d@#$%"

Player being healed: "AHHHHHHH IT BURNS...."
