Title: Proudly off topic
Post by: Nite_Star on 30, October 2008, 06:22:28
Dukes of Pride sounds like a gay clan ....

Well if u mean the dictionary definition then yes this will be a happy and joyful clan
which will reach for the highest

Quote
a: homosexual <gay men> b: of, relating to, or used by homosexuals <the gay rights movement> <a gay bar>
(taken from http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/gay (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/gay)

:D

In the United States, having "pride" is often used as a euphemism for being gay, as in a homosexual--e.g., "gay pride."

That is completely false, just because there is a phrase "gay pride" does not mean that pride is a euphemism for "gay"...one could easily find a million examples when "pride" or "proud" is used not in that context.
the "gay pride parade" simply means a parade where people are proud of their sexuality...and I do not see how you go from that to "pride"="gay" as a figure of speech in the U.S.
To look at your other example is "movement" also a euphemism for "gay" because there is a phrase "gay rights movement"?

Context is everything in the USA.  Especially with this.

If a Preacher (christian minister/ religious figure) asks if you are a proud follower of jesus, then you answer yes (regardless of the truth) or you'll be lynched. (context- from the bible belt states)

If someone in school asks you if you have school spirit, or have pride in your school or country, then you say yes, (regardless of the truth) because if you say "no," then you will be required to participate in a debate about the specific points you make as to "why not." (context- american public school system)

And of course, if you are walking on a sidewalk, down the street, and someone asks you "do you have pride, man?"  This is the only time you will honestly want to be honest.  Because if you mess up here, alot of people will have the wrong idea about your sexuality, as words spread faster than wildfire.  This is the connotation of someone asking "are you homosexual."

I am not against homosexuals, but i won't deny it does disgust me, and certain body part perform certain functions.  However, i can't say that i haven't at least been curious at least once or twice in my life.

As with all things though, Pride is an egotistical venture.  If you want to be a better person, then so is the way of the Humble, not the proud.

lol.

I won't deny that i am often proud either.  :: sighs :: the fallacy of idealism.

I guess I'll have to take your word on this TPK, although I lived near San Francisco for years (aka "Gay Capital of U.S") and experienced my share of on the street propositions by a man, never once was the phrase "do you have pride?" used as code for "are you gay?" (nor have I heard it ever used in this sense)...

he posted more before - that is right, though he also took short breaks sometimes ... as I do hehe. And what's the problem if some1 still posts, who "quit"? U can find dozens of players in this forum who quit and came back (and some of them quit again and came back again etc. pp.). And, btw, if u read posts before hte "I quit"-thread, u can see that Alu is a liked member of Daim community (not going into details, though) - something u are still working on, I guess >:D
