Hello there!

How's the Daimonin project going?

I've noticed that one of my favorite games is still up and running. As per the title of this post, I have some thoughts I would like to share. Uncertain as I am of the end goal for this project, I do think Daimonin would benefit from a remake/reboot of a sort.

I think if Daimonin and its core ideas, themes, and frameworks were to be redone in a more modern way, it could reverse the objectively dead state of this game; I don't like saying things like that, but it's unfortunately within the realm of fact that this game is not doing so well in player numbers. I nearly fail to understand how the passion hasn't yet died.

As an annoying preteen, I used to daydream about where this game would be in the following ten years. Now that it's been closer to twenty years since those days, I've seen what the state of this game is and it is definitely an improvement upon what it used to be.

However, I think Daimonin can reach new heights with a different approach. From what I can gather, this game in its current state is highly difficult to program. At least, it's more difficult than modern methods. I have very little programming knowledge myself, but even so, modern methods seem to be more streamlined.

Do you guys think this project is going well? If so, you can feel free to disregard my suggestion. I'm not the one steering the ship nor do I want to be.

TL;DR -- It is my opinion that a modern remake of Daimonin could revive the playerbase.

Atm dev activity is mostly frozen. If we unfreeze our 2 last devs, it depends on time each dev is willing to invest. Currently my motivation to work hours and hours on code is very low. Devs get also older by time. Interests are shifting. Like players changing their games, devs would also like to do this. For sure devs mostly stay longer in the same project than players.

So its manpower, young fresh coders, we don't have. I see only old burned out meat.

The whole game coming from the past. Mostly players staying longer in this game coming also from same time. Players who played in past this game. The world is changing. Younger kids are mostly not interested in such a game like daimonin. They want reality in their virtuality and want mostly easy mouse interfaces. They want easy installs and yes if it is a MMORPG, they want a playerbase.

So our problems on daimonin behind missing manpower is first the client. The resolutions coming from the past. Client has no good windows fullscreen mode. Fullscreen is a pain on windows if you work dual screens and the higher resolution our client is support are ugly.

From the other side the mouseinterface has still problems. Walking is not smooth and itemmanagment with mouse is pain.

Looking server sided we have still long year existing bugs, sometimes implented not of bugged coded, but instead of deep integrated logical structures. Behind this current server cannot handle 100 players.

We are open source but also not. C code coming from crossfire in past is visible. Also some lua scripts and some maps. But the majority of maps and scripts is non public. So in this combination without a real open source, its not easy to find free coders.

Also open source models shifted away more and more and the new magic word is patreon/crowed financed coding.

So this coding model here, has no income. We can't buy new grafics for example. In past it was mainly the active player base, shifted by some time to devs.

But you are right, it could be interesting to make things easier. But you need always think for 2 sides here. This is server/client coding. You need always code a client and a server.

I looked last year, if it is possible to work on a client in python, html5 and also java. But the time I would have had to invest for this, was to much. I had enough work with reading in code, improve my c, fixing old bugs, working my own ideas, scripting, mapping, item balancing, implenting new art, uploading, commenting code and comunicating with players. Behind this is normaly also the administration of website, discord, ... i luckly could avoid. Luckyly this is all still running and we have some few old devs could jump in here in emergency when nessecary.

So back to your topic. You need at least one dev only working on the client. We don't have.

Before I jumped in daimonin dev, i puzzeled a little with sdl 2.0 in c++. Was a plan to port the client from sdl 1.0 to sdl 2.0. But that was before i looked in client code. Currently i decided, its better for my soul not to try to do this.

Beside that a missing playerbase is also demotivating dev activies. So each player i talked to in last 2 years and which has left the game is negativ motivation for me.

Finally current world situatation is like kindergarden. Stupid childish monkeys playing with pandoras box. And if the world ends i don't want to sit here and code for a game, no one plays. So currently i also wait and see, what these monkeys plan next and chill my day.
Don't believe the shit, you hear in mainstream. Believe your own body. Your body is speaking always the true to you. But you need to understand your body. Hear to your body, not to your ego. And when body is calling to you: "Hey something is wrong!" find the reason(s) for that. Man in White don't go for that, they don't want to heal you. They want earn money and sell you medicine, you should take rest of your life. You are not the patient, you are their customer. Never forget this!

It truly sounds to me like this project is on life support.

It's saddening to see this game die, but then again, there is nothing about it in its current state that will attract newer players.

So I wonder if it's best to let Daimonin have her long awaited rest.

She'll remain in our memory.

I don't really like that you are asking for servers to shut down, there are still people that play from time to time and Dolfo has spent a lot of time adding so many features to the game and person has added late game dungeons.

If servers do shut down someday, I do hope it is possible for players like me to obtain full server and map files so that we can continue playing. I do plan to play daimonin decades into the future  with breaks in between even without any updates and hosting it myself.

It would obviously be the best If developers work on the game when they can, Dolfo became a daimonin developer very late and there weren't many players but he still put in so much effort and time, who is to say that we can't get more people like that or for old devs to come back?

Let's say there isn't any updates from now on there could still be players returning or finding the game so it would still be better compared to playing alone and self hosting.
