clobber

« on: 28, October 2009, 15:34:21 »
It was cold. It was windy. It was dark. Clobber sat crossed leg at the mouth of a cave of ruins. She was resting, waiting; tired after a day of fighting for the mercenary guild that consumened her life. As she rested, she heard a rustle. Her ears strained for any other sounds, anything at all that might be cause for her to draw the large spiked hammer that she used so sparingly. It was then that she heard it, the soft patter of footsteps followed by the breaking of a burnt out torch she used for a warning to detect other creatures. Being so deep in Orc territory she knew that to ignore these and assume they were friendly would be suicidal. Clobber pulled out her hammer and stood up slowly. Quietly she took a step out from the ruins of a wall where she had concealed her camp  and peered around the corner.

She was desperate to see what was moving before it saw her; that was her only chance of beating it. She stopped and gazed into the darkness, willing the thing to move enough to see it as the sounds had long since stopped. Heart racing like thunder, Clobber stood out from behind the wall and lunged her hammer into the darkness. A satisfying crunch told Clobber that she had made contact with whatever creature was moving outside of her camp. Gazing around again she could see the sillhouette on the floor. It looked human. "Drows look human." thought Clobber as she dragged her bounty back to her camp, careful to make no unnecersary sounds.

As she reached her base she patted the body down, desperately searching money, potions or anything that could be use to her on this quest. Unfortunately, she was unable to find anything apart from a flint stone in the creatures hand. "Ah..." Exclaimed Clobber, for she now knew what method of attack her enemies were now testing. Long range, slings, knives. Anything so that they wouldn't need to come near to Clobber or near to her hammer.

Clobber reached her bag and pulled out a torch which she lit. The flame surrounded the area with enough light to make out what she had slaughtered. Had the circumstances not endangered her, Clobber would have screamed. The light fell over her attackers face, illuminating the eyes that were still wide open, looking shocked. She couldn't believe it. She wouldn't believe.

She had clobbered Grommit. :o

What do people think?
I'm hoping Grommy might see this and write his account of this fictional tale as a reply (megahint megahint ;) )

"Ouch" thought Grommit. As he lay there wondering who it was that had hit him, he thought he had better play dead to be on the safe side.

"Ouch" the character grommit said,
As he wondered who had hit him on the head,
Scared and worried he just played dead,
As he was shoved and pushed upon a bed,
He was searched by hands that were as cold lead,
by a fiend who was careful of where to tread,
"Oh no" came of soft voice as water was fed,
For this fiend was only Clobber instead.

I think I could be the next poet laureate ;)

Chapter 2 :P

A silent, solitary tear trickled down Clobber's face. She was remembering all of the times she had spent laughing with Grommit. When they had first joined the guild, going to their first quest and noticing they were only fighting ants. Clobber's heart ached with grief. She still couldn't believe that she had murdered him.
"Please great and might Tabernacle, please let him live." She whispered a prayer to the Tabernacle as she rummaged through her sack looking for something that could help Grommit. She pulled out a vial of potion, taken from a drow guard deep in the ruins she attempted to conquer. Having not completed her quest yet Clobber hadn't returned home to ask the smith to identify this strange, amber, viscous liquid. She felt for any pulse on Grommit's neck. There was a small one. A weak one. Clobber's eyes became teary as her whole body rejoiced and readied itself for what must be done next.
"This potion could finish him off. Or it could save his life" Clobber mumbled to herself as she pulled the bung of the vial off. She smelt the liquid, it was firey. Deciding that this could be Grommit's only chance of survivial she tipped the vial upside down over his mouth. Clobber watched as the vial emptied, hoping for a positive response from Grommit. She waited, and waited.

Grommit's whole body spasmed. Clobber gasped in horror: She had killed him. She knew it, a sin against the tabernacle, one of her closest friends, she had killed him.

Clobber hung her head in shame, more tears came pouring down her face as she held onto Grommit's body waiting for the violent movements to stop. Suddenly, he spluttered. Then he was still. Clobber looked into his face.
"AAAAGGGHHHHH!" Screamed Clobber, completely forgetting her surroundings. Grommit's eyes were wide open. Grommit blinked, Clobber stopped screaming.
"You're - You're alive?" Clobber asked as though this was only a dream. Grommit nodded, looking confused.
"Where are we?" He demanded, speech slurred slightly.
"Deep inside Orc Territory, just above their Underground City." Clobber replied hastily, willing herself to make up to Grommit in every possible way for attacking him.
"And you just screamed." Said Grommit. It was a statement, Clobber didn't know how to reply. Had it been light, Grommit would have seen Clobber's face turn red in embarrasment.
"We had better ready ourselves for an orc attack." Grommit sat up and swayed slightly. "That liquid, what did you think of it?"
"That it was your only hope." Replied Clobber, growing ever more embarassed.
"It was whiskey." Grommit said simply. Clobber would have laughed under any other circumstance, but now remembering where she was she merely stood up and wielded her hammer.
"Why did you come here, Grommit?" Clobber asked slightly more fowards now that she could see Grommit's lips twisting upwards into a smile.
"The guild wish for me to bring you home. They believe they made a wrong move by sending anyone to the Orcs."
"I see." Clobber was very displeased with this piece of information, having spent months away from civilisation it was now seen as a waste.
"They wish for me to bring you home first thing in the morning." Grommit added, sinking back onto the floor. Clobber was about to argue when she realised that Grommit's body had gone limp and sleep had fallen over him.
Clobber spent the rest of the night looking over her close friend, protecting him. And although there were no more orcs that night, Clobber remained alert and ready to fight for morning.

Chapter 3:

It was early morning when the sun began to rise. Clobber hadn't moved for several hours other than to check on Grommit who lay in a deep stupour, undoubtedly helped by the whiskey he had been forced to consume.  This sunrise meant the start of a new mission, a new quest: Time to go home.

It had been several months since Clobber had last seen her Grandfather, Longir, and she was looking foward to seeing the aged man whom she admired again. He always had something new to tell her, whether it was gossip from the village of Stonehaven or a new remedy for poisons that were inflicted by beasts such as scorpions.
Clobber amused herself for a while by imagining what new tales her grandfather may have for her upon her return to Stoneglow.

Clobber was dragged out of her daydream by a rummaging sound coming from Grommit's bed.  She looked over and smiled to see her friend awake and moving. Grommit was searching through Clobber's rucksac.
"What do you want?" Asked Clobber pleasantly.
"Food - Breakfast." Grunted Grommit, intently continuing with his search.
"Try the back pocket." Clobber offered watching Grommit search eagerly for the food. Grommit pulled out some chicken legs that were cooked the night before and tore of a chunk greedily.
"We must leave soon." Grommit mumbled through a mouth of chicken "Otherwise the Orcs will resume their posts and we will be slaughtered if we try to get through." Clobber nodded in agreement and began to roll up her sleeping pack.
A mere twenty minutes later and the duo were ready leave back to Stoneglow. Clobber had her back hitched up on her back meanwhile Grommit picked up another flint stone from the ground. Clobber looked at him inquisitively, and as though Grommit knew exactly what she was thinking he answered the unasked questions.
"I thought it would be quicker and less dangerous to come without weapons. I could use stealth and ensure that I wouldn't be seen." This made sense to Clobber as she knew that some humans had been allowed down into the Underground City unattacked, providing that they carried no weapon. "The Orcs are not as stupid as we think." Though Clobber as she set off behind Grommit, her feet treading in his footprints.

Chapter 4:

Clobber and Grommit's escaped from the Orc Territory was, very fortunately, uneventful. They managed to reach the guards on the other side of the battlefield without injury and, although, were chased by one single Orc, they suffered no damage.
They rested for a while at this base and were cared to by a nurse with the name of Kyia.
"How long will you be staying?" Asked Kyia kindly, looking caringly at both Clobber and Grommit.
"Not long, a few days. I have to return to the guild." Answered Clobber bitterly remembering the wasted months that she had spent infiltrating Orcs. Kyia seemed to understand that this was a topic to be left alone.
"I shall got and get our leader, Smacky." As she left the tent she stroked a grey tabby cat that sat on a crate (doubtlessly containing ammunition for the solidiers protecting the base) who purred at her touch. Clobber looked around the tent; she could see more wooded crates such as the one the cat was sat upon, a large writing desk and chair that looked like they were made of oak and a table with 8 chairs where she and Grommit sat. Her eyes came to rest on Grommit who ran his hands through his black hair as he yawned. Grommit placed his chin upon his chest and closed his eyes.
"It's nice here..." He said softly as sleep drifted over him. Clobber looked at her muddy brown leggings, made slightly moss coloured by the canvas of the tent and decided, then and there, to do no more work for the Guild.
Clobber looked up when she heard footsteps approaching from outside the tent and a deep voice in conversation with a voice that Clobber recognised as Kyia's.
"Where are they from?" Asked the deep voice.
"The Mercenary Guild. The girl has just finished a 5 month long mission in the Orc territory." Replied Kyia's soft voice.
"And the man?" The deep voice grunted.
"He gave the message for her return. They are friends, travelling home together."
"Do you trust them?" The voices seemed to stop moving. The couple had stopped walking. After a momentary pause Kyia replied.
"Yes, I do."
"Then we shall help them." Said the man, as the footsteps began again, getting closer to the tent. Clobber was looking at the canvas door when she saw a hand pull it back and Kyia enter followed by a man wearing a dark brown linen dress.
"My name is Smacky." The man began "I am leader of these warriors that protect our race from the expansion of Orc-kind." Grommit's eyes opened and took in the dress that this man was wearing. His lips started to turn upwards into a smile however Clobber kicked him under the table to prevent the pair offending the man who would be looking after them for several days. "Kyia has told me of your mission, one that we support fully." He said turning to Clobber. "Therefore we wish to extend our hospitality to you - You are welcome here for as long as you wish." His dark blue eyes crinkled as he smiled. Grommit and Clobber uttered their thanks to Smacky, they all shook hands and before long they were sat around the table eating dinner together.

Chapter 5:
It was day break. Clobber lay on her back staring at the green canvas ceiling of the tent that she had spent the night sleeping in. As she lay, she reminisced over the events of the previous night. She was remembering Grommit's face getting redder and redder with each booze he consumed, Kyia's smile as she chatted merrily about the domestic cats they shared the camp with and, most of all, Smacky's excitement as Clobber relayed information about her time with the orcs to him. "Oh yes" thought Clobber contently "It was a very good night."
Clobber's thoughts continued along a similar line, varying from Smacky's dress collection that he had presented to her to the picture of her grandfather's face, beaming merrily as he saw her return. It wasn't until the rustling that Clobber knew too well that she was jerked away from her memoirs. Clobber's ears strained listening to what it was, it sounded just like the Orcs attempting to be stealthy. The load footsteps crunched upon the morning grass unsteadily. Clobber's heart began to beat faster, adrenaline rushed through her body and she leapt up simultaneously grabbing her hammer. She crept towards the canvas door and pulled it back ever so slightly, just enough to see what was going on outside.
Grommit was outside, his strong shape was resting against a box, similar to one that was in the dining tent. He looked like he was waiting for something. Clobber stared, wondering what he was waiting for and was about to step foward when Clobber's finely attuned ears picked up on a more soft, gentle patter of footprints upon the grass of the campsite.
As Clobber watched with interest at what event was about to occur she began to make out the shape of the other figure approaching. A delicate figure emerged out of the dark early morning shadow of another tent, her hair pulled back into a bun and the sun rise illuminating her beautiful face.
Kyia strode towards Grommit elegantly, when reaching him, he pecked her on the cheek. Clobber looked away from the scene smiling to herself. "How sweet." Clobber thought. Wishing to intrude no longer, she looked inwards to her bedding and through nothing other than the sake of being nosy she looked back out of the canvas for one last peek.
Clobber tightened her grip on her hammer as she peered through the gap and then dropped the hammer on her foot when she saw Kyia and Grommit outside the tent, entwined in eachothers arms.
Clobber was torn between screaming in agony or surprise. "How close were they?!" Clobber thought to herself. She couldn't lose her best friend to another band of fighters - the Mercinary Guild would never forgive him, he wouldn't be allowed home for fear of being chased out by other members of the Guild.
Clobber stormed out of the tent.
