I think Michtoen is aiming for around 10,000 players on a server at one time.  But I'm under the impression, that with the right machine, it could easily do more.

:o i'd like to see over 25 lets get there first
It has to be fun. If it is not fun, it has to be moving.
If it is not fun or moving, maybe we can poke it with a stick and make it mad.

Hm, I think 10,000 is a little optimistic, although I guess a lot depends on the oomph of the machine running the server.

ISTR somewhere or other (possibly an old wiki) it was claimed the one or other dev successfully ran the server with 1,000-1,500 clients connecting to it. But obviously that would be lab conditions.

A few years ago we had 100+ players online occasionally IIRC..I think the server will happily chug along with several hundred.

It depends on how powerful the server PC is, and the bandwidth limit. The average player uses 64Kbps to my guesstimate. I don't know the exact specs of the server PC but it was upgraded almost three years ago. The older server handled more than 100 players.

I was under the impression that Michtoen was aiming to eventually write multi-threaded code for the server so it could make use of multiple cores if necessary.  That would easily push it over 10k with the right box.  But it really doesn't matter until we start really stressing the server.

When MT said the server could handle about 1000 players at one time, the server was at the time a Pentium II. So it should in theory handle a few more now.
