Cole'sLaw wins. It looks like it's all down to signing problems (in C, for reasons I don't really understand, sometimes you get strange results when you try to combine signed (-n to n) and unsigned (0 to n) numbers; luckily you can force the one to the other by casting it). So by adding/changing a lot of casts I am halfway there (the specific problem remains ATM but a similar issue elsewhere has been fixed, so a little more massaging of the code should do it). Hurray.
